Beer and
Bollocks 4 - a weekly wrap-up
24/09/2001
Firstly
Tartan Heart
Well it's a fortnightly wrap-up this week because just over two weeks
ago there was a ska gig in Sydney put on by Tartan Heart Ska klub and
Offcut promotions. 5 ska bands for just 10 bucks was a pretty good deal
too. Normally i'd do a full review with photos for a gig like this, but
after the first two bands I decided just to drink and have a good time.
I hate taking photos. Anyway, first up was Little More than You, a ska-punk-pop
band from Sydney's west in a similar vein to Reel Big Fish. I liked a
few of their songs and the reception from the crowd was not bad, a few
youngins got up and danced, or at least ran around in a circle. The singer
even had his own rockstar microphone! Rubix Cuba from Newcastle were up
next, not my thing, couldn't get past that op-shop white suit. The gig
really got going when The Skam played. All great guys in this band and
a good set of originals and covers such as Rancid's "Time Bomb",
Op Ivy "Freeze Up" and The Specials "Little Bitch".
Many of the crowd were dancing, which was good to see. Riot City, old
school cover band were up next and played a decent set as per usual, finishing
up with a spirited randition of "Skinhead Moonstomp." The Last
Hemeroids finished the night off with a set of only 4-5 songs, and suddenly
the night was over. One of the better tartan heart shows id been to, with
some new faces which is always good to see.
Then the
weekend in Gerringong
Well with Top Novil, Brazen Hearts and Run For Cover and 2 more bands
playing in Gerringong (about 2 hours south of Sydney) it was decided we'd
set up at the caravan park 5 minutes away and make a good night of it.
We started drinking about 4:30, then went to the town hall where we met
up with the skam from sydney. The gig was pretty good, although Middle
Finger Salute are a shite band. Them and getting accidently punched in
the face by Luke Run For Cover were low lights, but highlights would come
later. We decided at 10:20 it was time to go get on the piss, but as we
tried to leave we were told by the organisers we had to stay until 11pm.
A few heated comments were expressed and out we went, bloody country town.
After loitering long enough to make our point we went back to the caravan
park and started a drinking session that didn't end for some until 9am
the next morning. Of course on the way home, the Sydney folk had to see
the Kiama blowhole and for some reason look out at the ocean. Hard to
understand for someone like me who sees it everyday. Great night and morning
all round though. One person who will remain nameless went to the wrong
van and got in bed with a girl that wasn't his girlfriend - a definite
highlight.
What Get's
My Goat
People demonstrating against detention centres. Many of the people
in them are criminals, so to say they should be set free in the community
is the same as opening the gates at Long Bay gaol. Take a look at yourselves,
think about what you are saying before you hit the streets shouting things
that are absurd. Nuff said.
Movie/s
of the week
Shaolin Temple
Jet Li early film - full dizzybeat article on these movies soon.
Link of
the Week
Uppers - a great mod site, you
may notice similar aspects between our new look and Uppers. Different
enough not to be copying though.
Music
I'm listening to this week
Judge Dread - Big 24
What an LP. I love sitting there listening to the lyrical genius of this
man. It's especially good when you have a hangover. Once you here his
work you'll be hooked. I wish he wasn't dead.
Gig I'm
going to
Maybe Carry on Oi! - but seeing I'm broke I may just go to a party, but
who cares really?
Well there's
another rant over. Highlight had to be the night at the caravan park listening
to ska, punk and Irish folk with nine others and having drunken yet very
interesting conversations.
