Beer and Bollocks 2- a weekly wrap-up

02/08/2001 - I haven't had time for much lately, but I figure doing this shouldn't take too long. I'm afraid between here and November 8th there will be little added to this site, because of exams, but at years end this will be the most updated ska site on the net. I have a whole pile of zines that need to be sent too, hopefully that will happen soon.

The Australian Bluekilla dates have been announced, one of my top 10 bands I'd have to say, so it was good to hear they are playing the the ska baron city of Wollongong - my hometown. So I'm going to 3 of their shows - can't wait. I can't stress enough how good foreign films are, mostly other languages. Not better than UK movies, but better than US ones in general. Nothing else interesting has really happened this week...

Movie/s of the week
Beyond Silence
A German movie about a deaf and dumb couple who's daughters aren't. The older daughter and main character plays the clarinet well and goes to Berlin to pursue her musical career. Not the most exciting of movies, mainly just exploring the relationship between the deaf father and his daughter. Highlight would have to be the scene in a Berlin club when the girl and her aunt play clarinet together in an impromptu jam with the backing of a jazz band. 3.5 outta 5.

Dragon Lord - starring Jackie Chan
A Jackie Chan movie from about 1982, well before his entry into Hollywood, and even Police Story. Some great fight scenes, but it would have been an even better film if Yuen Biao and Samo Hung, had also been in it. I just love the movies where those three team up. The storyline is romance based turned illegal Chinese smuggling prevention, but hey when did a decent Kung Fu movie's story line matter. Highlight would have to be a scene where they are playing a game similar to soccer, but with a large shuttle cock. The difference being the cock can't hit the ground. The skill level is spectacular. 4 outta 5

Link of the Week
UK Punk and Oi - it's a site similar to Pulped, but better in that it's regularly updated and has heaps of news - in all street music genres, not just Oi! and punk. Lots of interviews to although they seem a bit mundane. Not enough online zines have good content and are regularly updated (including this one lol), but here's one that is.

Music I'm listening to this week
I'm really getting into Dancehall reggae lately, the riddims are taking over. I've never been a rap fan, but as Dancehall predates rap and is much smoother, combining the reggae beat with the power of the Jamaican accent I'm quickly becoming addicted to Dancehall.

Favourite Songs
Buju Banton and Beres Hammond - Pull it Up
Beenie Man feat. Mya - Girls Dem Sugar
Jimmy Cliff - The Harder they Come
Beres Hammond - putting Up a Resistance
Bluekilla - Rudeboy Land
Bluekilla - Skaship
The Business - Harry May

Gig I'm going to
Another gig at the Greensquare - this time with Polystigma, Mourning George and Notion. Not ska, but only six bucks and put on by the lovely Anne of Offcut Promotions fame. Saturday night 8-11 pm (hopefully photos from this gig)

Wow this column wasn't just one of my ideas that died as soon as it started. One more entry in Beer and bollocks and it will be the longest "regular column" I've done. No. 3 next week.
