Band: The Slackers
Album: Wasted Days
Reviewer: Glen Smyth

The hype surrounding the release of this CD may have lead to disappointment, when I finally got to listen to the whole thing, but that's definitely not what happened. The Slackers are perhaps the most popular neo-trad ska band in the world right now, and they deserve it, because they are simply so good. The lyrical and vocal genius of Vic Ruggiero is complemented by the backing (and sometimes lead) vocals of Q-Maxx 420 and Glen Pine as well as the superb musicianship of all the Slackers members. The album more or less sticks to the ska sound, but of course influences such as rocksteady and dub are also there. The criticism of Q-Maxx 420s singing ability isn't evident on this CD, "Make Up My Mind" being one of the best songs of the CD as he takes the lead. There is no bad song on this CD however. "Dave's Friend" is my favourite song, but with other awesome songs such as "Wasted Days", "The Nurse" and their cover of Bon Jovi's " Wanted Dead or Alive" it makes it difficult to pick. Forget about ska/punk, The Slackers have released close to if not the album of the year and its real ska.
