When I saw the cover art of this CD I was a bit worried about it being just another ska/punk band putting out just another ska/punk CD, but after listening to it, my opinion improved. Sure there are songs such as "saffron" that are ska/punk but the CD has more influences including swing and rock'n'roll. Cheese excursion hail from Bendigo, Victoria and from reports they put on a pretty good live show, even recently supporting Mad Caddies on their recent tour. This live feel is well reproduced on the CD, either that or the recording is shoddy. The vocals are rough and raw, but I like them. The horns are powerful and prominent throughout all thirteen tracks. "Call me Bill" is very much down the path of the latest swing sensation and is a highlight track as is "Feel the vibe" is a rather good attempt at old school for a young and up and coming band. More like that song I say! For you fans of ska punk you can't go past "mine" with lyrics such as "Don't touch my girlfriend, or I'll kick your fucking face in". Admittedly some of the lyrics aren't the most meaningful compositions, but Cheese Excursion are a fun band, that have released a disc that grew on me with each listen and for only ten bucks you can't go wrong. There are a couple of songs I had to skip past, but the decent songs make up for them. Recommended not only for ska-punk fans or local ska fans, but also for ska fans who want a good-time CD thats cheap as chips. |
