Interview with Gus Kenny from Trojan Horns taken from Issue #4 of the Skammunicator fanzine.

Gus Kenny is the lead singer of the Melbourne ska and skinhead band Trojan Horns. In my opinion this bunch of 18 year olds is the best young up and coming ska band in Australia. It's probably because they play ska like it's meant to be played, as a dance beat yet not too fast. A couple of skinheads and some lasses in the band, you just can't beat that combination.

What's a near perfect Saturday night for Gus Kenny?

I'd have to say a mixture of last saturday night and the night allniters came to town (if we played either gig)..lots of beer, BAD MANNERS, ALLNITERS, hanging round afterwards drinkin and talkin with bad manners, my girl, playin to a big dancin crowd, dancing..and maybe back home afterwards to eat pizza, drink more and watch liverpool win a cup final

How and when did you first get into ska?

my dad was into it back in the early 80s, and so i was born into it, but he
grew out of it mid 80s and went more into the aussie bands like hunters and
collectors...but he kept alot of his records and still listened to em so i grew up listening to madness and specials without knowing what ska was as a music.
but when i sorta discovered it for myself bout 4-5 years ago...through bands
like area 7 and stuff...

Trojan Horns were due to play Sydney's Tartan Heart Ska Club. Why'd
you pull out and are there new plans for a Sydney trip?

umm, well the thing is that it was a bit fucked up both ends, we had the tartan heart gig, but people this end didnt want to go up there only for one or two gigs, and up your end, there was problems organising gigs. As for "are there plans to go to sydney?" wed like to, but itd have to be FULLY organised..gigs and all..

Are Trojan Horns popular with Melbourne gig organisers/booking agents? Any problems having underage members?

Yeah we seem to be getting a fair few gigs, whether they are gigs we've
organised ourselves or people asking us to play gigs that they have organised. As far as underage members goes, weve only ever had one pub refuse to let us play because of underage people. but all the band will be overage by the end of this year anyway.

You seem to be a big Bluekilla fan. Are you confident of Trojan Horns getting a support slot for the Melbourne gigs of their November tour? Do you know any details of their tour we may not know?

Yes i am confident that we will get supports for the melbourne bluekilla shows, because ive already organised for us to play the ska bar (sort of like the tartan heart, at the arthouse first thurs of every month) when they come down, and my girlfriend is organising the underage show on the saturday, so i would assume we'd get supports there aswell.

Best gig you've played? details...

Best gig we've played, shit, i dunno really, lately we've really improved i think, people have been saying it aswell, just getting alot tighter and stuff, but i'd have to say the bluekilla gig if its out of gigs we WILL play, but if its gigs in the past, i would say probably either the Skafest that Sharon from Commissioner Gordon organised or last time we played at the Ska bar, we headlined and there was a good crowd.

Favourite aussie bands?

Past or present?
Present would have to be, oiska as my number one! then loin groin,
australian ska orchestra (but those two dont play much anymore) and bomba
(great reggae/ska/funk band) then 99% fat, commissioner gordon and all those
ones for melbourne.
I saw the seen from adelaide on saturday night with bad manners, they are
pretty good indeed!
Last hemeroids, bedlam beggars, backy skank and riot city looks like they
could be good with a bit of practice, for sydney
dont mind backdoor stomp or the kingtides or whatever they are now.
and ill say special brew for Perth.

For bands in the past, id say strange tenants, no nonsense, allniters,
naughty rhythms, engine 54, off the shelf, the latenotes...and any band
thats on pete porkers ska skank downunder compilation.

You have recorded some songs in the past, any plans for TH to release something new soon?

yes, there is, there is a slight idea of a thought starting to form to do
with doing something with Gary Rosch of Skaman Records, but nothing is
organised yet.

Do other Trojan Horns members have the same interests skinhead
reggae and ska wise? How do you find nine members all from the same year at school interested in playing the ska?

Not really, me and tom (guitar) would have to be the most into it, then chris (bass) has a very broad range of musical tastes, from ska, to cheesy 80s music and beyond, and the rest of the band dont mind the music but wouldnt listen to it on a regular basis, although, wally (trombone) likes a fair bit of early jamaican stuff but doesnt really seem to get into the 2tone and skinhead reggae all that much.

What is the obsession with Alan Partridge?

If youve seen either his mock chat show or the sit-com series, you'd know
why!

I love english football, but can't get pinpoint why I hate other soccer and love the claret and blue of Villa. Why English football for you and why Liverpool?

I don't really know, ive always supported liverpool since i was very little (bout 11 or so years) but i dont really know why i prefer english football to the other games, i like german football, but we dont get to see much of that at all in australia, but as far as spanish or italian football goes, i can watch it if its on, but i cant get passionate about it and i dont support a team. I think it is to do with the style of play, more powerful and fast in the english game.

What really pisses you off musically? what artist/band should give it up straight away?

As far as ska goes, ive sorta gotten over preaching about the bastardisation
of ska, i wouldnt tell any skapunk band to break up cuz of the music they
are playing, i just dont listen to it, but if they like what they are doing then go for it. but as far as other stuff goes, i dunno, im a bit of a purist really, i like music with an offbeat thats not too fast to dance to. dont mind a bit of oi every now and then either.

Immediate and long term plans for Trojan Horns?

i dunno, i guess just get more of a name for ourselves, play lotsa gigs and
maybe get some merch sometime in the near future. and I'd like to go to
sydney sometime before the end of the year but i dont know if that will happen or not. Ill keep you posted.
long term plans...well, id like to go to europe and tour round germany and
possibly england, but that is a pretty far fetched plan and probably would
not happen...but we can dream...
