A guide to Melbourne by Chelle, webmistress of Keorecords - visit her site!

(originally just an e-mail to me for my December Melbourne trip, i decided it should be put up as an article)

The best way to go around Melbourne City is by foot/tram/train, seeing that cars aren't allowed on the main streets anyway, so i've tried to relate where places are by the train stations.

Missing link is THE one-stop punk/ska/hardcore store for all your needs. They have everything, at a price, because most of it is imported... but they have everything from the local scene, EP-wise they're really good. They also have badges, stickers, patches, hoodies etc. You can also find out what gigs are going on from there.
262 Flinders lane (next street up from Flinders Street Station)

Smoke Dreams, as the name suggests they have smoking paraphernalia, as well as patches and hoodies, and a good selection of earrings, studs etc.
296 Flinders St (walk up from Flinders Station)

Au-go-go records, this place is awesome for your more alternative music, and rare vinyl or just vinyl in general. Tthey have heaps of 2nd hand stuff, and if you have time and some spare cash (2nd hand stuff form there is cheap as) you can find heaps of stuff if your willing to look. The dude who takes care of 2nd hand dealings is really good at valuing what you have (vinyl wise) and he knows lots of stuff...
349 little Bourke St they're just above the intersection of ltl bourke and elizabeth st. they've moved now, just across the alleyway, there's a big yellow door to show you the way.

Metal Mayhem, is the only metal/hardcore specialty place i know of in Melbourne. It's got heaps of studded stuff as well.
371 flinders st.

Brunswick St. Fitzroy. In Melbourne u've got Chapel St, where the rich ppl go to shop and hang out and look cool.. well there's also Brunswick St. its got more of a relaxed feel. the whole street is cool. heaps of great places to have lunch, and just look around. some great alternative bookstores, record stores, expensive 2nd hand stores (which kinda defeats the purpose)
get on a tram from Collins St, just ask the driver if he goes near Brunswick St.

The cheapest venue i know is on Brunswick St. its the "punters club" some gigs on weeknights, graveyard shift weekends is free. It's a great little venue, the bar is on the side.
376 brunswick st.

Beat magazine and Inpress are the 2 street presses we have, you can grab either from cd's stores, dangerfield/revival stores. I prefer beat, but both have a good gig guide.

The BEST 2nd hand supermarket EVER is "Savers", all u need is a few bucks and willingness to look around.
330 Sydney rd, Brunswick.

The Corner Hotel is an awesome venue, just check out the street presses to see what's going on.
57 Swan St. Richmond (short walk down from richmond station) swan st. isn't a bad place to have a look around, its your basic strip shopping place.

The Arthouse, good venue, its just been renovated i think.. i'm not too knowledgeable about 18+ venues or pubs, i'm still underage.
Cnr Elizabeth and Queensberry St's, city (Elizabeth is the other big street that is perpendicular to Swanston St)

And last but not least... i definitely recommend getting down to a local battle of the bands or just a local gig of Melbourne bands that u haven't heard of. you probably know all the melb bands. but here are some that do regular gigs around the place and i reckon are worth checking out:

the homewreckers
the lads
charter 77
loners with boners
vial8
for amusement only
eulogy
trojan honrs
your name here
waylayd

I could go on for longer but i'll stop there..

So yeah.. there's my guide to melbourne, if u don't mind looking like a tourist, i suggest walking round with a melways, the streets get complicated, but as long as u can find swanston again, u'll be fine.

hope that helps you out.

cheers, chelle
